Fishing For Stars

Some things from the past stay fresh in the mind… the curve of a young woman’s breast, the sheen of suntan on her legs. A look, a sidelong glance, so beautiful your mind takes a snapshot to retain it forever, images in which the colours never fade. Out to sea on a pristine morning on the gaff-rigged cutter Madam Butterfly with the ocean spray hitting your face, when you were young and strong and anything was possible. Friends, partners, business deals, government bribes, drink, fortunes to be made and lost, islands, women, children, hope. Anna and Marg, especially Anna and Marg, the yin and yang of womankind. They’re all there trapped in the brilliant blink of a flashlight, then stored as a lasting image. Mine as long as the lens in my mind remains clear.

Set in Australia, the Pacific islands, Japan and Indonesia during the latter half of the twentieth century. Nick Duncan is an ingenuous male with a great deal more female on his hands than he can possibly hope to understand. The contest he is called upon to referee is the clash between the two great loves of his life: the seductive Anna Til, and the older, equally fascinating Marg Hamilton. Nick struggles between their worlds: one exploiting the world’s riches for profit, the other fighting to save the environment and its creatures, large and small.

I loved this book as much as the The Persimmon Tree. It is wonderful story. I loved the cultural insight in Japanese culture. I have read all Bryce's books and have not found one I could put down.

I loved this book, it certainly makes me think about the larger picture. Two very passionate women and the man caught in the middle. Sensational, I read it over a month ago and still think about it. Well Done!

Yet another wonderful read! Ordered it from QBD as soon as it was released. Can't wait the year to get it in Canada.
